Courses & Lectures
During annual GK-12 Workshops, UTMSI’s Marine Education Services incorporates course material for teachers and fellows to explore new ways of teaching science
and math to students, leveraging the vast array of natural features and resources on our Gulf Coast.
Course Content:
Special Topics in Marine Science # 15
Application of Field Research Experiences for K-12 Science and Math Educators
The University of Texas Marine Science Institute, Port Aransas, TX
Instructor: Dr. Richard K. Tinnin, Director, Marine Education Services
The interdisciplinary nature of marine science and the ready access to barrier island beaches, rock jetties, salt
marsh, submerged aquatic vegetation, and open ocean habitats provide a natural laboratory for this field-based course
designed specifically for K-12 science and math teachers. This course will focus on inquiry-based instruction, and
explore effective, constructivist-oriented teaching strategies. A goal of the course is the development of grade level
appropriate lessons and activities. The lessons and activities will focus on the interdisciplinary nature of marine
science through lectures by UT-Austin faculty and visiting a variety of nearby beach, ocean, open bay, and estuarine
habitats. Topics and content focus of the lessons will include the collection, analysis, and presentation of data
collected in the field that can be used to enhance student learning in math and science. Graduate Fellows will work
with students to develop activities and lessons that will be presented for peer review as part of their final grade
for the course. Copies of all lessons and activities developed by students will be collated into a notebook that
will serve as a valuable classroom resource.
The Marine Science Institute is located on Mustang Island, a barrier island near Corpus Christi on the central Texas
Gulf coast. Facilities include: classrooms, dorm housing, cafeteria, library, offices, research labs with running
seawater, experimental ponds, one large research vessel and a variety of smaller boats.
