Science, Education, and Sustainability
Academic excellence and environmental awareness through innovation and collaboration
The University of Texas Marine Science Institute’s GK-12 Program partners graduate students with K-12 teachers to
improve public science curriculum and promote environmental sustainability through classroom activities,
workshops, and field projects. The project provides K-12 teachers and students with enhanced knowledge and innovative
learning strategies in the areas of biology, environmental science, aquatic science, geology and oceanography.
This multi-year initiative offers a unique and distinctive science and environmental education program to Texas teachers,
while providing financial support to graduate Fellows within multiple departments at The University of Texas at Austin.

At UTMSI, graduate Fellows are partnered with master teachers from Port Aransas Independent School District (ISD) and Flour Bluff ISD
(elementary, middle, and high school). Typically, each Fellow is assigned to work with two teachers and his/her students. Fellows spend an average of 7-8 hours per week with each teacher, either in the classroom
or on local field trips. Teachers and Fellows attend monthly meetings together, full-day workshops, and special public lectures given by invited scientists to UTMSI.
